Green Effect

Green color brings with itself a soothing , balmy effect .Imagine an exotic location with vivid hues , and I am sure the first few colors in one’s mind would be blue and green. Turning insipid environs to bouncy and lively ones, making listless souls feel high-spirited ; such is the effect of green surroundings and environments .And we ,PGPEX students, are fortunate enough to have one year to ourselves to stay away from polluted hustle-bustles in a lovely, green campus at IIMC .This life, though, comes at a cost(apart from the huge programme fee and other implicit costs) , which is nothing but living with more insects ,more lizards ,more chameleons(which also turn to green color many a times),some snake encounters , and so on and so forth .Nonetheless , realising that despite all these, benefits outweigh costs we have learned to live with these local inhabitants .

I still remember my first day here when I was so afraid of lizards around but now they seem to have become an integral part of my stay .I never knew that these reptiles can be so level-headed , you learn to neglect their presence but they still want it to be known. For instance, for last few days ihave started noticing that my despicable lizards have now got so courageous that they now dare to crawl on the floor and unless i shoo them away they just relax on the floor and keep raising my frights.

This was only one part of the green effect. The other part which has recently started unveiling is the waters around Howrah Bridge (on our way to classes).Initially when we joined the programme, the waters were brown in color but the green effect has been so contagious that gradually they also seem to have adapted to the greenery around. My understanding says that it can be attributed to algae’s outgrowth but some other part of my cerebrum says could it be owing to variety of camouflaging species ?Whatever be the truth, i today heard that those waters are house to some native water monsters and crocodiles and now my beliefs have strengthened enough to say that God has bestowed upon us ample fortune to avoid any mishaps .

So in these ways, in addition to its known benefits, greenery is bringing forth a new courageous me, and leaving with it a trail of harmonious ecosystem where you accept the slimy creatures around and avoid ‘HIT’ usage unless they really start perturbing you.

  1. The reptiles at IIMC are, I suppose, as integral to the landscape here as the tiger is to the Sunderbans. Enjoy it. Wearing ankle-high boots might give you greater peace of mind!
